Nerd on a Shelf
First Things First: I Lied. I haven’t blogged in a month and a half. Here is content I just threw together.
Welcome to the new year, first post of 2022! I should add some house keeping but let’s just get this idea in motion.
Most recent project on the channel was covered in Episode 33 Nerd Café | Unbox, Build & Chill #1 - "Updating the Shelf" where I fixed up my display shelf. You see in the beginning moments of the video how it originally was organized for the 4 years prior to filming and as things progress you see the display progress. I had a lot of fun with this one, I’m understanding where the channel is going and what I enjoy doing as a hobby. At this current moment I have a nice stash of figures I’m saving for a bigger space that I can’t wait to get to…but the shelf unit from IKEA is no longer in stock. So here’s to hoping global supply chains are slightly resolved when I move to a new place, or at least I’m paying inflation prices. So let’s start with “New” Tier 1 (I’ve already made a change, I can’t help myself).
The new Tier 1 displays my current Marvel Cinematic collection. It all started with the MK3 Iron Man helmet as just a prop I had no idea I would really place. I had an idea to make the faceplate modular (no idea about engineering) but I recently just found a reddit post of someone who was able to print 3D parts and program a board to finally enable this. Following up the MK3 helmet I got the MCU Black Panther helmet as a college grad gift. The movie character was just awesome and the design was my favorite of his current incarnations. Then like a Boomer I collected certain physical movies because Disney+ wasn’t yet out and what if I don’t care for the service? Now 4 MCU shows later I’m still watching but having these copies enables to create the “always-on” setup for the future - a blog for a later date. Then recently I started my figure collecting with this Infinity Saga Iron Man from Target that included a few modular pieces, pretty accurate and one of my favorite suits and top Marvel movies. Lastly I was able to track down this ML Black Panther with T’Challa head and complete the current setup. Appreciate the amazing role you played Chadwick, Long live the King.
Ah, the first figure itch I started to scratch 3 years ago starting with UI Goku aaaallllllllllllllllllllll the way in the back left there. You can see the timeline on my Know_Your_Craft_YT Instagram when I picked this up in 2018 for the cheap at Box Lunch. After that I continued purchasing the remaining statues you see one by one from whichever outlet had a sale or was the cheapest (SSJ Goku was about $50 man!). I finished off the set with Super Broly in the back for $25 which was a steal and decorated with some art I had around the crib. Some new Grandista’s are tempting me to keep buying but I’ve been restraining myself to the best of my ability…until I don’t.
Oh how the past 6 months have been harsh to my wallet.
I never did the calculations of how much was spent on figures in total or how much it was to create the diorama but I still have the costs for each individual item in case I do a build-with-me style video. But to stay on topic I’m glad with how this turned out with the space I have and I was able to pick up the figures I wanted to complete the dio. from June to December I really went on a Transformers Lore binge and I’m still watching the G1 TV show which has been fun to appreciate. These Beast Wars figures are great representations of the 90’s show and I didn’t expect to pick up a whole season 1 Maximal cast. Then I added characters from the War for Cybertron Netflix show but from the media that I enjoyed the most as of recent, so that is why you see TF: Bumblebee figures littered among the scene (Optimus, Bumblebee, Blitzwing and Starscream). Then whichever Decepticons and Predacons fit the story got included and I may add some more in the future. The next Transformers shelf is already under construction in my head, I just need the house to install it.
Finally to my first love for collecting; Sneakers. Moments and memories cemented into history turned into fashion which I believe has begun to slow down for me. I still have a decent collection and wear all of my kicks, just the process in which to obtain the shoes was supposed to be way easier with the inclusion of technology but the state of it all has really turned me off from attempting to fight “hired bots.” Now I pick up certain kicks I may have missed out on in the past if possible but the new way is for the new kids and I hope they enjoy the hunt similar to how I used to.
But TLDR; my small display here is for 2 of the most impressionable kicks in my collection. The Space Jams were a cross one of childhood animation and what would become my favorite sport, and thankfully I was able to wait in line like the good ol’ days and pickup in Champs (wild I know). Then the ‘96 All Star game had one of my favorite team jerseys, and I thank Krystle for investing $300 into a beautiful authentic gift for me. So I had to follow up with obtaining the shoes that went with it and was able to pick up from Offer up. And here you have my Jordan tier.
And that’s it, this is the story behind the elements on my Nerd Shelf. Collecting has always been in my blood yet I always have to hold myself back. I’ll be doing more setups and dioramas going forward so this isn’t the last blog you’ll see and hope to help others in the future the same I was helped by YouTube. That being said I’ll speak to you in the next one. Peace!
